Synthroid

synthroidSynthroid is a synthetic version of a hormone usually produced by the thyroid gland. The active ingredient in Synthroid is levothyroxine sodium which is formulated as oral tablets.

Drug Uses

Synthroid is available by prescription only. Synthroid is used to regulate the body’s metabolism when the thyroid gland is dysfunctional. Synthroid is also used to prevent goiters (enlarged thyroid gland) which can occur as a result of hormone imbalance, surgery, cancer, or radiation treatment.

Doctors prescribe Synthroid for other medical conditions.

Dosage

Synthroid should be taken as prescribed by a doctor. Synthroid does not have to be taken with food. Never increase or decrease the dose without consulting a doctor. Synthroid should be taken in the morning with a full glass of water to prevent the tablet from dissolving and swelling in the throat.

Do not suddenly stop taking Synthroid even if you are feeling fine. You will need to use Synthroid continuously to stay healthy.

While using Synthroid you will need to have regular blood tests to ensure that the medication is working correctly.

Missed Dose

If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.

Precautions

Do not take Synthroid if you are allergic to levothyroxine.

Do not use Synthroid if you have a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an untreated adrenal gland disorder, or if you have had a heart attack.

Synthroid is not expected to harm an unborn fetus, therefore it is safe for pregnant women to use this drug. Although Synthroid is passed into breast milk, it is not expected to harm a baby. If you fall pregnant while using Synthroid inform your doctor because your dosage may need adjusting.

Ensure that your doctor has a full knowledge of your medical history, including any other medications you are using. These include vitamin supplements, herbal medicines and over-the-counter remedies. Synthroid can react badly with certain medications.

Synthroid is usually prescribed for life. Long-term use can cause bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis. Speak to your doctor about this.
